Breakfast in Bangkok from 7am: Sun Society Before a City Day

Plan an early breakfast at Sun Society on Sukhumvit 31 before exploring Bangkok. Menu highlights, opening days and practical advice for your route.

The hardest part of finding a good breakfast in Bangkok is the clock. Plenty of cafes do a nice plate of eggs, but most open at nine or ten. If you want to eat before work, or before the heat, the list gets short fast.

Fit breakfast into your Bangkok route

For a Bangkok sightseeing day, an early breakfast works best when it fits the pickup route. If you are staying around Sukhumvit or Phrom Phong, Sun Society can be a first stop before continuing across the city. Tell your driver the full Soi 31, Lane 2 address and agree a departure time; the ten on-site parking spaces are a venue amenity, not a guaranteed space for a private van.

Keep the first part of the itinerary flexible and check the opening days before booking: this breakfast stop is available Wednesday to Sunday, not Monday or Tuesday. Pair it with a realistic Bangkok route and allow time for traffic rather than squeezing a sit-down meal between fixed appointments.

For breakfast and brunch in Bangkok, Sun Society on Sukhumvit 31 opens at 07:00, Wednesday to Sunday. The kitchen is running from the moment the doors open. Breakfast turns into brunch later in the morning on the same menu, so you're never told the breakfast items have stopped.

Who's cooking

The chef is Rafael Garcia, previously pastry chef at the one-Michelin-starred Cadence by Dan Bark and opening head chef at Scuba. Before Bangkok he ran a bakery in Paris, which matters most first thing in the morning. Pastry and bread are where a breakfast kitchen shows what it can do.

What to order for breakfast

Start with the salmon waffle; it brings together several of the kitchen’s signature ingredients. A sweet potato waffle, poached eggs, house-cured gravlax and ikura, and it's the house signature.

Other breakfast options on the menu:

  • Avocado toast: smashed avocado, a poached egg and confit tomato on toasted sourdough
  • Shakshuka: two eggs in a spiced tomato sauce with feta and cottage cheese
  • The chicken club with sweet potato chips, if you're hungrier than you thought
  • Pancake stack with banana, blueberry and maple syrup

There's healthy and there's comfort, side by side, and Thai dishes that have been reworked next to the Western ones. The menu lists calories and macros for every dish, which is rare in Bangkok and useful if you train in the morning.

A breakfast that doesn't break the bank

Most plates are 150 to 300 baht. That makes it a weekday breakfast, not a once-a-month treat, and a fraction of the price of a hotel breakfast buffet.

Coffee grown in Chiang Rai

The coffee is on from seven, and it's single origin from Chiang Rai. The beans come from Srima, a protected mountain area in Wiang Pa Pao, where Joe and Mild, a couple in their thirties, took over their grandparents' farm. The founders buy directly from local farmers like them because they want the money to stay in Thailand, with the people who grow it. (Read about the farm)

If breakfast turns into a working morning, take the laptop upstairs. The working floor has fast wifi and power outlets close to every seat. There's no time limit on a table and no minimum spend. On some mornings there's a free yoga, pilates or run club session before you eat. Loft Thai is now open at Sun Society too, making a massage or wellness treatment another option for a slower day in Bangkok; arrange the appointment with the Loft Thai team and leave enough time before your next stop.
